What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is your body's natural response to stress. It is a feeling of fear or apprehension about what will happen. The first day of school, the job interview .. Going or giving a talk can make many people feel scared and nervous.

Anxiety is based on the person experiencing it. Emotions can range from butterflies in your stomach to a racing heart. You may feel out of control, as if there is a connection between your brain and your body.

Anxiety symptoms and signs include:

  • Feeling nervous, restless or tense
  • Intelligence of impending danger, terror or destruction
  • Having an increased heart rate
  • Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation)
  • Sweating

  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Problems concentrating or thinking about anything other than current anxiety
  • Having trouble sleeping
  • Experiencing gastrointestinal (GI) problems
  • Having difficulty controlling worry

When to see a doctor

See your doctor if:

  • You feel overwhelmed and distracted by work, relationships or other parts of your life.
  • Your fears, worries or anxieties are stressful and difficult to control.
  • You may be depressed, have problems with alcohol or drugs, or have other mental health and anxiety issues.
  • You think your anxiety can be linked to physical health problems.
  • You have suicidal thoughts or behaviors - if this happens, get emergency treatment right away.
